“This is the LORD’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.”
Psalm 118:23
In 2000, Theodore Heights Baptist Church had dwindled to just eight faithful members meeting in an aging building and facing the possibility of closing its doors. Yet those families believed God was not finished with their church or their community.
That summer, a young preacher named Randy Tewell came to candidate as pastor. After much prayer, he and his family stepped out in faith to come to Theodore—even though the church could not offer a salary. The church was renamed Lighthouse Baptist Church, and Pastor Tewell began reaching the community, knocking on hundreds of doors each week and faithfully preaching the Gospel.
God quickly blessed the work. Within a year, attendance grew to more than 150 people, and by the church’s third anniversary, over 300 were attending each week—many having been personally led to Christ by members of Lighthouse Baptist Church.
By 2006, the church had outgrown its original building. Through faith and sacrificial giving, God provided a 22,000-square-foot campus that continues to serve people of all ages today.
In the fall of 2024, Kurt Copeland became the pastor of Lighthouse Baptist Church. With a heart for the lost and a passion for discipleship, he is leading the church to continue reaching Theodore and Mobile with the Gospel. As we look ahead, we believe the best days of Lighthouse Baptist Church are still to come.
